Juicer:
In order to do the 7-day detox and juicing, you'll need a good juicer. We've used several different kinds, and have found that we love the Omega 8300. You can probably find a good deal on one at eBay. You can also make fruit sorbets with this model. It's very easy to clean, too--so that means you're more likely to use it.

Blender:
The next tool you'll need is a strong blender. The one we use is the Blend-Tec. You could also probably find this on eBay, too. blender. This workhorse does everything, and we mean everything. It's incredibly strong, and you can whip up delicious, low carb, high nutrition frozen treats in seconds. Then, cleaning is a breeze, too. We're so crazy about it that we even bring it with us on vacation! (Sad, I know...) We just can't use any other blender now--we're spoiled.

You'll need these products to make any of the recipes on our site. You can find most of them in your local health food store, or in some grocery stores. If you'd prefer the convenience of shopping on-line, follow the links that we've provided.

Natural, Low-calorie Sweeteners:

Stevia:
We've tried all of the stevia products on the market, and most have a bitter aftertaste. We've found one that doesn't (use code LEN208 to get $5 off). We've been using this brand for 15 years, and it's consistently the BEST tasting. This site also has the liquid version, which we don't use, but we imagine that it would be convenient for adding to drinks and smoothies. Oh--they also make a travel size that comes in packets. These are great for keeping in your purse, briefcase, or car.

Erythritol:
This sounds like a chemical, but it's actually a natural product that's present in many fruits. It's a sugar alcohol, and is granulated like white sugar, but contains no carbs. (Like other sugar alcohols, the body doesn't metabolize the carbs, so there is less impact on blood sugar and insulin.) If you've tried xylitol (another, more popular, sugar alcohol), you'll like this even better. Why? Because erythritol doesn't cause the gastric distress (gas, bloating, diarrhea) that the other sugar alcohols can. Don't over-consume any sugar alcohol, though! Stick to one serving a day of anything made with erythritol, and you'll be fine.

You'll see that we use erythritol in most of our sweet treat recipes. But we've found that you need to dissolve it in butter or oil before adding it to the rest of the ingredients. Use our recipes to eliminate the guesswork!

Brown Rice Syrup:
Although we don't use this much (and recommend that you don't until you reach your weight loss goals), it comes in very handy when we make certain sweet treats that need the moisture of a sweet syrup (see our almost-sugar-free Pecan Pie Recipe). It has only 1/3 of the original sugar, but tastes just like the original! This recipe is perfect for holiday treats. Brown rice syrup is made by fermenting brown rice with special enzymes that break down the starch content of the rice. Its sugars are absorbed much more slowly than white sugar or corn syrup. Healthier Flours

Sprouted Flours:
If you're at all familiar with sprouting, you know how special sprouts are. When you sprout a grain, it transforms into a much healthier product. (But remember that we're aiming to greatly reduce ALL grains, including sprouted grains. Any grain product is a special occasion treat.)

Sprouted flour can be used just like regular flour. You should throw out all of the regular flours in your kitchen--even "whole wheat"--and replace them with this amazing product. We've found a great source. Just remember to refrigerate or freeze your flour as soon as you receive it. This ensures maximum levels of vitamins and minerals in this very fresh product.

Coconut Flour:
This low-carb, high-fiber "flour" can be used as a replacement for regular flour in recipes. Although it is high in fat, it is a good replacement for grains in your recipes. It is a great weight loss aid. We've read that you need to use 1 extra egg for each ounce of coconut flour used (which adds up to A LOT of eggs), but we haven't found this to be the case. We've included a recipe for flax seed muffins that replaces 1 cup of flour with coconut flour, thereby reducing the carb content significantly (only 6 g of carbs per muffin!) You can make your own coconut "flour" by taking unsweetened coconut and grinding it briefly in a blender or food processor. You can find unsweetened coconut in the bulk section of most health food stores.

Snacks and Shake Mixes

Raw Protein--Dairy and Soy Free:
This is a fantastic source of protein for use in smoothies or anyplace else you'd like to boost your protein intake. It's called "raw" because the company sprouts grains and seeds and doesn't heat them, so they retain all their enzymes and maximum nutrition. It packs a real protein wallop at 18 grams per serving, too. It also includes probiotics and vitamins A, D, E, and K...and tastes great to boot! Goat Milk Protein:
If you'd prefer your protein from an animal source, this product is very easy on the stomach. They take goat's milk (which is easier to digest than cow's milk) and culture it (like yogurt). These are the other nutrient-dense algae that we take on a daily basis. They help to keep our blood sugar stable, and keep us from eating unhealthy, fattening foods. Good Oils

Fish Oil:
Research published in July '06 showed that fish oil, when combined with moderate exercise, created weight loss with no dietary change. This just gives you another reason to take fish oil! It's vital that the fish oil be molecularly distilled to ensure no contaminants like heavy metals and PCBs. However, we've been doing a lot of research on the best way to obtain your Omega 3 fatty acids, and it's actually through a specific type of fish oil--KRILL oil. Krill oil has the added benefit of an amazing amount of antioxidants. Here's a high quality krill oil (capsule) that is also a great price.

Coconut Oil:
Although this fat is very high in saturated fat, it is an extremely healthy oil that ignites weight loss. It only has 1% of Omega 6 fatty acids (which is the type that we all need to reduce in our diets).

We cook with it because its smoke point is so high, and the oil won't turn rancid under high temps like other oils. We also bake with it, and you'll see it in the recipes on this site. There are quite a few brands out there now. Some brands are very expensive, though. We've found a brand that offers a very high quality product and processing method, for a great price. Macadamia Nut Oil:
This very flavorful oil has a similarly high smoke point to coconut oil, so it's safe to use it for cooking. It is very low in saturated fats (especially as compared to coconut oil), low in the Omega-6 fatty acids, and it has even more of monounsaturated fats than olive oil! It has a luxurious, decadent texture, and an exotic flavor. Yum.

Do you live in an area where natural and organic foods are difficult to find? We do! It's an hour's drive for us to get to a health food store, so we've tried a lot of on-line sources. High Quality and SAFE Fish

We'd almost given up buying fish. It seems you hear about the dangers of store-bought and farmed fish almost every day. But we found a great source that's lab-tested for contaminants like heavy metals and PCBs. And they're reasonably priced (c'mon--we shopped around!) We've had their wild Alaskan salmon, tuna, and halibut, and they're all wonderful. The sockeye salmon is very lean, though, so be sure to not overcook it.
