The Leptin Diet
The Leptin Diet is a relatively new way of eating that turns a lot of traditional nutrition on its head. Constant grazing and snacking are out, and spacing your meals to maximize this “fat hormone” is in.
What is Leptin?
Leptin is a hormone that was just discovered in the mid 1990s. Researchers are still learning about its impact on our bodies. But what they do know now is that it’s a hugely important hormone that’s secreted by our fat cells (white adipose tissue, to be exact).
The “King of Hormones”
Leptin is being called the “king of hormones”—and when it isn’t in balance, none of your other hormones will be, either. And it determines the amount of inflammation in your body, and as (mainstream) science has discovered very recently is that inflammation is a key marker in virtually every disease. So, if we want to be healthy and feel good, we must look for ways to get our leptin in balance.
Ways to Learn More
Byron Richards, CCN (that stands for Certified Clinical Nutritionist—a prestigious certification for a nutrionist) has become leptin’s cheerleader and vocal proponent. He’s published two books about leptin,
Mastering Leptin
and
The Leptin Diet.
I’ve only read the first one, which provides lots of scientific background on leptin and its importance to our health (and weight). From the reviews on The Leptin Diet, it sounds like that is a more direct, to-the-point version for those who don’t want all the nitty-gritty science. Richards’
website
is also a great resource. It has loads of easy-to-read information, including videos that walk you through the diet. They also provide supplements that jump-start the leptin balancing process and maximize your results. (They’re super-high quality supplements, too.) We’ve also included more information about this new way of eating
here.
